Large ultralightweight structures for a variety of applications including transfer optics and sails for propulsion are an important supporting technology for space power beaming. Their specific requirements are, of course, quite different, the former generally being much smaller, typically no more than a few tens of meters in size and requiring relatively precise dimensional tolerances even with active optics, whereas the latter may be as large as a kilometer but with dimensional tolerances to only perhaps tens of meters, but the basic technologies required for launch/deployment and for maintaining shape can actually be remarkably similar. This paper presents a promising structural approach that has been developed and demonstrated during the past several years under a Phase II SBIR from MSFC for large lightweight space telescopes but which, as will be shown here, may be quite applicable to other space missions as well.
