Models of the Soft Gamma Repeater sources involve two key parameters: magnetic field strength and rotation period. Several relevant observational probes of the SGRs are discussed, including: their quiescent X-ray and particle emission; the X-ray afterglow from the heated surface of the neutron star following a burst; and an anomalous group of low luminosity X-ray pulsars with properties very similar to SGR 0526-66 in its quiescent state (the best studied of which is 1E2259+586) [19,5].
