We present near infrared integral field spectroscopy of the nuclear region of NGC 1068, taken with the MPE 3D spectrometer. The near infrared H and K bands probe a variety of diagnostic lines, including the coronal emission line [Si VI], the [Fe II] emission arising from partially ionized regions, the Br gamma emission from the narrow line region, the molecular ro-vibrational transitions of H2, and the stellar absorption features of late type stars (CO bandheads and Si). We use all these diagnostic tools, coupled with spatial resolutions typically less than 1 arc second (using tip tilt correction) and in one case as fine as 0.15 arc seconds (using adaptive optics) to gain a clearer understanding of the physical processes of the narrow line region in NGC 1068. A significant improvement over previous studies (using NICMOS and Fabry Perot instruments) is the ability to create spatially and kinematically resolved line maps. Our model uses all the near infrared tracers, as well as data from the literature (mm interferometric data, NICMOS archival data, cm radio emission) to form a comprehensive picture of the spatially resolved kinematics of the narrow line region in NGC 1068. The model successfully also explains the observed reversed kinematic profile of the [Fe II] emission.
