The motions of loop prominence knots are examined on H alpha-line filtergrams, using contours of equal photographic density for the entire cinegram, and considering knots with either constant acceleration or constant velocity. The method of mean velocities is developed to experimentally determine, with high accuracy, the constant component of the knot acceleration. A theoretical analysis indicates that knot deceleration in a longitudinal field is due to the resistance against the pressure of opposing gas, the raking of the gas, and the appearance of a preceding shock wave; it is established that the raking of gas cannot be the major process causing deceleration. It is also found that the coronal temperature along the path of knot motion varies within 1.0-3 x 10 to the 6th deg K, and that there exists a mechanism of initial knot acceleration that is unrelated to the gravitational force.
