The problem of generation of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe is investigated in the framework of left-right symmetric grand unified models. We show that in a class of grand unified theories like the SO(10) model the very existence of the baryon asymmetry of the Universe requires the right-handed weak gauge bosons to be almost as heavy as leptoquark bosons.
