The High Energy Telescope (HET) aboard the Ulysses spacecraft provides excellent charge and mass resolution (Simpson et al., 1992, A&AS 92 365). Over 300 manganese events have been analyzed for their isotopic composition. Most of the manganese events are secondary spallation products of the heavier iron-group cosmic rays. The ^54Mn abundance implies a galactic density through which the cosmic rays pass of about 0.33 atoms/cm^3 for a β half-life of about 1 Myr. The corresponding confinement time for the iron-group cosmic rays is about 15 Myr. An abundance of the long-lived electron-capture species ^53Mn at the source cannot be ruled out. Therefore, this work does not constrain the time between nucleosynthesis and injection into the cosmic ray accelerator.
