It is now known that, under certain conditions, disk flow around protostars, neutron stars and black holes can lead to the formation of a pair of anti-parallel ``jets", flows of gas apparently directed perpendicular to the disk. These flows can be collimated within a distance of several hundred times the radius of the central object and may persist as the jet expands through over six decades of radius. Generic explanations of jet formation will be reviewed. In particular, it will be suggested that jets are powered by the central object and collimated by magnetic tension forces associated with bipolar hydromagnetic winds that carry away a significant fraction of the angular momentum liberated by the inflowing gas in the disk. It will also be suggested that jet propagation depends upon the existence of a radial pressure gradient in the surrounding gas.
