Hydrodynamical interaction plays an important role in the evolution of close binary systems. Identification of its observable effects can provide valuable information on the systems. In this talk, I will discuss various processes that may affect coalescing neutron star--neutron star and neutron star--black hole binaries, including dynamical instability of the orbit, resonant excitation of stellar modes, tidal stabilization of the neutron star, etc. The gravitational wave emitted by merging compact binaries contains information about the neutron star mass and radius, and can be used to constrain nuclear equation of state. I will also describe some recent observations and theoretical analyses of radio pulsar--main sequence star binaries, which provide interesting constraints on the initial conditions of neutron star at birth and the supernova characteristics.
