This paper briefly reviews the status of research on High Energy Cosmic Rays, in particular those populating the highest part of the energy spectrum (ECR > 51018eV) and believed to be of extra-galactic origin. An outlook on a new generation of experiments hopefully capable of answering open questions on production, acceleration and propagation mechanisms of these particles, concludes the paper.
