We propose to observe damped Lyman-alpha absorbing systems (DLAs) for Faraday rotation of background radio continuum emission. The construction of the new CABB instrument has opened a new parameter space for the observation of rotation measure (RM) synthesis towards DLAs, and the extremely large bandwidths now available to ATCA allow for rapid high-sensitivity measurements. The sample of known DLAs has been searched for alignment with background radio continuum sources with flux density in excess of 20 mJy, and a target list of 94 such DLA systems has been assembled. An unbiased control sample of 100 quasars has also been compiled. We propose to use 72 hours of ATCA time to survey these targets for Faraday rotation at L band as well as at C and X bands simultaneously. The results of this survey will provide constraints on dynamo models for the amplification of magnetic fields in galaxies.
