Analytic solutions are obtained for the problem of determining the variations in the magnetic field caused by a three-dimensional current system, as well as for the inverse problem of reconstructing the electric field on the basis of variations in the magnetic field at the earth's surface for the case of inclined force lines given homogeneous ionospheric conductivity. It is shown that for structures elongated in the latitudinal direction, the influence of the angle of inclination is minimal and that it is reflected in the change in the overall conductivity in proportion to the reciprocal of the angle's sine. In the general case, the influence of the inclination can be as large as desired even with small deviations in the magnetic field from the vertical. The usual neglect of the inclination of the force lines at high altitudes is therefore considered unjustified.
