The Lyman alpha emission from Uranus was measured by IUE. The effective geometric albedo sets a lower limit of 0.5 ppm for the hydrocarbon mixing ratio in the high upper stratosphere as well as an upper limit on the atomic hydrogen column density of 10 to the 16th power/sqcm above the methane layer. In conjunction with IR temperature determinations of the Uranian stratosphere, it is most likely that the observed Lyman alpha emission is due only to resonance scattering on H atoms above the mixing region of the atmosphere.
