Interstellar reddening of 59 Cyg, its luminosity, and the appearance and disappearance of the circumstellar spectrum in Be stars are discussed. An interstellar reddening value E(B-V) = 0.067, smaller than the older determinations, is reported. The interstellar 2200 A feature is not contaminated by the circumstellar spectrum. The total luminosity of 59 Cyg was determined at two different phases, with emission and nearly without emission. No difference between the two luminosities was detected and they are equal to the luminosity of a normal B star having the same lambda1 D parameters as 59 Cyg. It is suggested that Be/Shell star envelopes are more or less permanent and that the appearance and disappearance of the circumstellar spectrum is due to small perturbations.
