Linear polarization observations (UBVRI) of HD 199178, a star of the FK Com type, are reported. The polarization shows a dependence of roughly gamma to to -4 and is variable, with a periodicity of 4 d. Magnetic active regions (spots or faculae) asymmetrically distributed along the longitude, are seen as the probable cause of the polarization (Rayleigh scattering and/or saturation in the transverse Zeeman effect) varying with the stellar rotation period. The polarization in the R and V bands is found to be larger than expected. It is thought that the intrisinic linear polarization observed in HD 199178 probably derives from chromospheric activity.
