A simple derivation of the critical pitch-angle for the trapping of a particle incident on the magnetopause is presented for the case when the magnetopause is a tangential discontinuity. The present equations allow more realistic calculations of magnetosheath particles entering the earth's magnetosphere for typical Maxwellian magnetosheath plasma distributions than previous formulations. It is noted that the threshold angle for capturing is a quantity that depends both on location and particle velocity, and that only special regions on the magnetopause can be transparent for particles, these regions differing for particles having different velocities.
