Viking UV images of the connections between so-called polar cap arcs and auroral regions (often associated with intensifications in the auroral distribution) are presented and discussed, with special attention given to temporal characteristics of these intensifications. It was observed that these polar cap arcs are often connected to bright regions in the auroral oval, with the connection taking place preferentially at one end of the oval, implying a linkage from this source region to very high latitudes. These intensifications are highly dynamic on time scales of minutes, being sometimes suggestive of substorms. The polar arcs may move in response to the dynamics of the intensification or else remain spatially fixed.
