Cosmology is an observational science, since we are unable to make different Universes with varying conditions or initial conditions. Even so, by finding relatively simple initial conditions that evolve under the actions of known physical laws into a system very much like our observations, we can have fairly secure knowledge of the current contents and conditions in our Universe.
