The application of the Maximum Likelihood procedure is outlined for estimating the scale height and scale lengths of the exponential disc of the Galaxy. Based on a GCVS-IRAS and a DENIS sample we estimated the scale height of Mira variables. The calculation resulted in 260 pc for the 300^d < P < 400^d period and 590 pc for the P < 300^d period GCVS-IRAS Miras and 510 pc for those selected photometrically from the DENIS data.
