The origin of the lineations observed on Mars by the Viking Orbiter is examined. The filamentary lineations are from 2 km to about 75 km long and less than 1 km wide, and are located at latitudes from about 65 deg S to 75 deg N and almost all longitudes. The seasonal occurrence of the lineations is studied. The relation between the local, ephemeral, and intense atmospheric phenomenon, in particular the baroclinic wave passage, and the origin of the lineations is analyzed. It is suggested that these tornadolike intense vortices may contribute to the stripping of the northern Martian plains and the accumulation of coarse materials that may affect the circumpolar and crater floor dune fields.
