It is shown that the main features of the daytime equatorial F-region can be explained by rapid photo-ionization and recombination in a neutral atmosphere whose temperature increases rapidly during the morning and is roughly constant during the afternoon. The main features explained in this way are: the exponential shape of the electron density versus height profiles, the morning maximum in curves of electron density at fixed heights versus time, and the gradual rise of h max F2 during the day to great height. It is suggested that the increase of [latin small letter f with hook]0F2 after sunset observed in the sub-equatorial regions is due to the rapid cooling of the atmosphere and ionosphere after sunset.
