The full set of field equations for a static cylindrically symmetric string system is considered, and it is shown that the surrounding space-time is asymptotically conical, providing that the energies and pressures decay rapidly enough. For the case of the Abelian Higgs model with U(1) gauge invariance, a local string solution to first order in G(eta-squared) is exhibited, and the asymptotic deficit angle is found to be 8pi(G)(mu). Application of the technique to the corresponding U(1) global string reveals no regular asymptotic structure. A C-energy argument is used to demonstrate that, within linearized theory, such local strings are resistant to radial collapse.
