Among the various methods used to measure temperature profiles as well as concentration profiles of minor constituents in the terrestrial atmosphere, optical remote sensing is the most widely used. This method which is based on various experimental techniques (Grating spectroscopy, Fourier transform spectroscopy, diode laser spectroscopy, microwave spectroscopy...) may use different platforms (ground, aircrafts, balloons, satellites...) but in all cases it requires an accurate knowledge of the spectral parameters (line positions, intensities, widths, absorption cross-sections...) in order to derive reliable profiles. It is worth noticing that nowadays this requirement is even more critical given the recent progress in experimental techniques. In this paper we present and discuss two selected examples for which the ultimate limitation on the accuracy is due to the spectral parameters. In particular recent results concerning the infrared spectral parameters of HNO3 and CλONO2 will be described.
