The production of prompt muons in the earth atmosphere is discussed with reference to results of calculations of the contribution of prompt muons to the vertical atmospheric muon flux. The analysis takes into account recent experimental results and theoretical achievement on charm generation in nucleon-air nucleus interactions. The results obtained are compared with experimental data from underground laboratories.
