A joint analysis of magnetograms measured on both the day and night sides of Mars and of Mars-2, 3, 5 and Phobos-2 measuremnets of solar wind fields and plasma indicates that Mars has an intrinsic dipole field controlled by the solar wind. Data on the Martian magnetic field and magnetosphere are reviewed here, with particualr attention given to the the physical nature of the boundary of the regular magnetic field on the day side; the magnetotail; and the dipole field and the problem of the planetary core.
