Cosmology: Dark Matter, Cosmology: Gravitational Lensing

Scientific paper

Recent astrophysical clues point to dark matter being relativistically cold, resulting in the presence of substantial dark substructure within the halos of large galaxies. However, the gravitational lensing action of stars, coupled with a smooth dark matter component, can result in a signature which mimics the presence of dark matter subclumps. In this work, we examine the question of just how well such 'gravitational microlensing' can resolve the nature of dark matter, finding that the true resolution is limited by the scale of the source under consideration. However, multi-wavelength studies of gravitationally microlensed systems will provide both clues to the nature of dark matter and the details structure of cosmological sources.
