The empirical magnetospheric magnetic models of Tsyganenko and Usmanov (1982) are used to determine the self-consistent plasma pressure gradients and anisotropies along the midnight meridian in the near-earth magnetosphere. A technique for a magnetic field 'inversion' is presented that is used to test the recent empirical field models. It is demonstrated that these models are consistent, in well-constrained regions, with a nearly isotropic plasma pressure in magnetohydrostatic equilibrium with magnetic stresses. Satisfactory agreement is found between model plasma parameters and the limited data available.
