It is shown that drifting ionospheric irregularities are connected with MHD disturbances, which can propagate along field lines in the form of Alfven waves. The magnitude of these disturbances increases with the drift velocity in the external field and in relation to the density difference in the irregularities. In auroral regions the magnetic effect from randomly distributed ionospheric irregularities can have a substantially high value (10 nTl) in daytime conditions; at midlatitudes the value is about an order of magnitude smaller.
