A link across the Atlantic was established to connect the US Space Physics Analysis Network (SPAN) to Europe, in support of the encounter between the ICE spacecraft and the comet Giacobini-Zinner. The European SPAN community numbers 70 nodes. In addition, SPAN is connected to the High Energy Physics Network (HEPNET) which has 150 nodes in Europe. Around 1200 computers are connected to SPAN and HEPNET. Development plans of the European SPAN are outlined.
