Sun: Gravitational Deflection
Scientific paper
The question is posed whether the bending of sunlight in the Sun's own gravitational field has to be considered when the radius of the Sun is calculated from the observed angle. The general relativistic calculation yields a radius 3.0 km smaller than the standard value calculated by means of Euclidean geometry. The precise numerical calculation employed shows that the exact deflection of light rays observed under large angles differs substantially from the parameterized post-Newtonian (PPN) approximation used for an estimate of the PPN parameter γ.
