It is pointed out that most of the characteristics of violent and sudden events in astronomy can be explained simply in terms of well-established laws of physics if electrical discharges, similar to lightning, occur in the atmosphere of stars and galaxies. The theory that solar disturbances are caused mainly by the movements of charged atmospheric particles may explain why the level of activity in the sun is so closely related to the tidal effects of the planets. Questions of galactic evolution by electric discharge processes are also explored.
