We generalize the Gerlach and Sengupta (GS) formalism for linear perturbations of a spherical background to high orders. With this aim, we define tensor harmonics of any rank that reduce to the Regge-Wheeler-Zerilli (RWZ) harmonics for the low-rank cases. In addition, we provide a closed formula for the product of any pair of these tensor harmonics. We analyze the gauge invariance and describe an iterative procedure for the construction of high-order gauge-invariant objects. At second order, gauge-invariant variables and Einstein equations are explicitly obtained.
