Extremely metal deficient stars provide information on the chemical environment of the earliest star forming regions of the Galactic halo. Their element abundances represent the metal--enriched ejecta of the first episodes of the deaths of massive stars during halo star formation. An on--going program by Beers and collaborators to identify and study new stars of this type is outlined, and recent results in the detailed study of extremely metal poor stars are described as an illustration of results likely to emerge from the on--going studies.
