The October 20, 1989 sudden storm commencement (SSC) over East Asia triggered an unusually severe ionospheric disturbance, which is presently interpreted as due to the depression of the magnetopause by solar wind pressure; this triggered a damped vertical expansion and compression of the entire magnetosphere, including both the ionosphere and plasmasphere. The perturbation propagated from higher to lower altitude, causing a wavelike ionospheric disturbance. An additional wavelike motion occurred the following day, and is seen as a product of the ionospheric response to the auroral substorm associated with a low latitude aurora observed in northern Japan.
