The papers presented in this special issue provide an overview of recent research concerned with magnetospheric physics and substorms. Topics discussed include the factors influencing the intensity of magnetospheric substorms, interpretation of optical substorm onset observations, factors determining the latitudinal extent of auroral acceleration region, and the relation of magnetospheric convection to the expansion onset of substorms.
