The Einstein action of a higher-dimensional multidimensional geometry yields effective multi-scalar-tensor models on a lower-dimensional manifold. While the latter in general may be inhomogeneous, all internal spaces are assumed here to be homogeneous. Different conformal reparametrization gauges for the geometry on the effective manifold yield qualitatively different, though dynamically equivalent, effective σ-model representations. In particular, the geometry of their target minisuperspace depends essentially on the gauge of the frame. The σ-model is examined in more detail, including the peculiarities of effective dimension 1 (cosmology) and 2 (string theory). In the Ricci flat case, a new, generalized inflationary, vacuum solution is described. Finally a brief outlook is given to a possible coupling of geometry with additional matter fields, in particular for scalar and generalized Maxwell fields.
