"SZ-1" is the first test manned spacecraft developed by China, with which several key techniques concerning re-entry atmosphere have been tested. One of important term is the thermal protection system (TPS). The following subjects in the evaluation of TPS are introduced. Based on the correctly analysis of the re-entry heat environment over the surface of thermal protection shield, the most suitable TPS concept is chosen. Under the support of ground test ablative material is screened and the thermal protection structure is verified. Some local thermal protection problems are treated very carefully and also verified by ground tests.
