Universities have essential roles to play in virtually every aspect of the space program. They pursue forefront research; they develop new technologies; and, most important, they educate the next generation of scientists and engineers who will carry on after them, continuing a vigorous program of space exploration, national defense, and economic growth. However, the continued ability of the universities to perform these essential roles is very much in doubt. Investments of previous generations have run their course; faculties, as with the rest of the space workforce, are aging; infrastructures are deteriorating; student enrollments are declining; even the attitudes of university administrators towards space engineering and science need reinvigorating. These and other issues will be discussed, and a number of solutions suggested.
