A consideration of the aeronomic processes of the lower D-region predicts a temporary enhancement of ionization at ionospheric sunrise. Experimental evidence of the enhancement is to he found in low frequency and very low frequency radio propagation, as increased absorption or lowered reflection height. The temporary layer is more apparent in winter than in summer, and is variable from day to day.
