The infrared reflectance of granular films consisting of gold islands of ca. 20 nm diameter and 5 nm thickness has been studied. The ellipsometric technique is outlined. Spectra of such films, also when covered with an organic layer exhibiting Surface Enhanced Infrared Spectroscopy (SEIRA), and their exceptional optical constants are presented and discussed.
