The plasmon decay rate to neutrino-antineutrino pairs is calculated assuming a nonvanishing magnetic moment for the neutrino. Since we are interested in the ultrarelativistic regime (T>mec2), an appropriate covariant formalism is introduced to treat collective plasma excitations. We show that this process could result in an important contribution to the production of wrong-helicity neutrinos in the early Universe.
