The contribution of the gravitomagnetic field to the proper time of a standard clock in orbit about a rotating astronomical body is discussed. Moreover, the influence of gravitation on the interference of electromagnetic radiation is investigated. The possibility of detection of the gravitomagnetic field of the earth via standard clocks or interferometry is critically examined.
