Wind velocities at 50-km altitude were derived, together with vertical thermal profiles, for various Martian locations; these measurements are interpretable in terms of a northern hemisphere middle-atmosphere temperature inversion. It is shown that a zonally averaged model of the Martian middle atmosphere can produce both a plausible zonal wind field and a thermal field that is in good agreement with observations. 2D modeling indicates that weak equatorial thermal inversions can be created by summer hemisphere retrograde-jet penetration into the winter hemisphere.
