Topographic profiles across 45 small valleys representative of the ancient highlands of Mars, obtained by 1D photoclinometry, have yielded mean depth/width ratios of 0.08; when valley profiles with uneven rims are excluded, the ratio is 0.07. Depths that are almost all in the 40-300 m range are obtained upon application of the lower ratio to the widths of a larger sample of small valleys. The measured valley depths imply that liquid water was often less than a few hundred meters under the surface in these valleys' vicinity during the period of their formation.
