This article provides a brief overview of gravitational-wave physics. The main focus is on the challenges and opportunities associated with gravitational-wave observations of the most extreme inhabitants of the Universe: neutron stars and black holes. The various ways in which these compact objects can radiate gravitationally and the physics that one can hope to probe by observing the associated waves are discussed.
