Recent observational and modelling work has suggested that apparent field line resonances with stable frequencies in the midnight to morning sector of the magnetosphere are driven by magnetospheric cavity or waveguide modes. A well-tried numerical model is used to investigate the frequency ratios and resonance positions of cavity/waveguide modes for comparison with the observations and the new models, one of which includes the magnetosheath. Apparent discrepancies between the models are resolved, and it is concluded that a structure having similar consequences to the magnetosheath must be included to obtain both frequency ratios and resonance positions in agreement with observation. Further development is required to explain the observed constancy of the resonant frequencies.
