Optical Systems: Aberrations

Scientific paper

The influence of Bessel and Bessel-Gauss beams acting as a combined filter of amplitude and phase on the point spread function and the encircled energy for an optical system having a spherical aberration have been investigated numerically. The maximum values of the axial and the transverse irradiance distributions for these beams are higher in an optical system having a spherical aberration than in an aberration-free optical system, but the maximum values for a clear aperture and a truncated Gaussian beam decrease when the spherical aberration increases. The authors show that both Bessel and Bessel-Gauss beams compensate for an aberrated wavefront caused by the spherical aberration and that these beams can be used to improve the image-forming ability of an optical system with a spherical aberration.
