The results of York and co-workers describing the canonical ensemble for
spherically symmetrical self-gravitating systems are generalized to an
arbitrary static field. The total energy of the system is expressed in
terms of the extrinsic curvature of the two-dimensional boundary
g00 = const between a system and a heat bath.
