The paper examines an expression, following from the virial theorem, for the magnetic energy of a large-scale current, in particualr of a current sheet above the photosphere in an active region. It is shown that the erroneous conclusion that this energy is equal to the gravitational energy of the current is based on an unjustified application of the mirror currents model to the solar atmosphere. It is further shown that, when correctly used, the virial theorem admits the presence of equilibrium currents in the solar atmosphere; the energy of these currents can be large enough to explain flare activity.
