New observations are summarized of upward flowing ions, both at intermediate altitudes and in the upper ionosphere. Some physical processes that may give rise to the expulsion of ionospheric plasma into the magnetosphere are discussed. Then the observed height distributions of the electron density are reviewed. Using these, the possible effect of the expulsion of ionospheric plasma into the magnetosphere on the electron density profile is discussed.
