A theoretical analysis indicates that the propagation of wideband electromagnetic radiation from a seismic source through the earth's surface, the lower atmosphere, and the ionosphere leads to the excitation of oblique Alfven waves in the 0.3-10 Hz range in the upper ionosphere and magnetosphere. The propagation efficiency is greater for a magnetic-type source than for an electric-type source, and increases with decreasing conductivity of the earth. The excitation zone is circular with a radius of 100-150 km.
